<VV> '65 Telecolumn Hub Color

I'm half way through cleaning up the wood wheel telescoping  
column--replacing the horn contact and turn signal switch--and want to refresh  the 
steering wheel hub.  Looking on the back it appears to be covered by  some sort of 
gray coating--maybe paint, but maybe not.  Does anyone know  what Chevrolet 
used to coat this part and what color is should be?   Silver?
