<VV> Burning oil

Hello Robert,

I had this same issue on the 86k mile (factory original, never apart)
110/PG engine in my '67 500 when I purchased it 3 years ago. The PPO had
installed dual exhaust so I could tell the smoke was from the right side.
The PO had recently rebuilt the carbs (a diesel mechanic who seemed to know
what he was doing) so I didn't consider them as a primary suspect. At first
start up cold the engine ran clean. It took about 2 minutes of idling to
when the chokes opened and the fast idle cams disengaged for the smoke to
appear. If at this point the transmission was dropped in gear and I took
off, a mosquito cloud of blue smoke would pour out the right side. There
was no noticeable smoke while at speed or when hot but the smoke would
return as the engine cooled while idling.

I traced this problem for quite a while--compression test, ignition, vacuum
leaks, etc--nothing. I did find that the idle circuit would occasionally
plug up on the right side and could not be adjusted properly. I could
correct this for a while by removing the mixture screw and spraying in some
carb cleaner--but the right side always ran rough at idle and the smoke
persisted. I eventually got tired of this and installed a pair of known
matched rebuilt carbs. I was able to finally get a smooth idle with even
firing on both sides. The smoke persisted for a few more days of daily
driving, then gradually went away!! The engine has since been running
clean for two years now.

I think that the persistent lean misfire at idle combined with moderate oil
consumption (86k on original rings) caused the rings on the right side to
carbon up. Once the mixture problem was solved and the cylinders were
firing properly, the carbon was blown out and proper oil control was
re-established.

Try swapping carburetors from side to side to see if the problem follows.

Morale: Never trust PO rebuilt carbs!
