In this particular case you're selling the car, so the question might really be "if I paint it will I recover the money in the sale"?  Kind of like redoing the kitchen in a house before sale.  I think if you're going to put it through an auction you might find that you can recover the price, depending on the cost of the paint job.  Corvairs in general don't command a high enough price to recover the cost of restoration, so if the value is at least close I'd keep it original.
