Joel,

That's my point.  The cable is taking a leveraged load--it and your leg aren't supposed to be applying or taking a 900 to 1200 lb load to release the clutch.

Of course the 
same concepts apply to the cross shaft which is easier to adjust and probably 
what most here are speaking of.
