<VV> bad lifter?

OK, lets do some thinking here. Have you used a stethoscope or long
screwdriver (stick your ear up to it and place it around the engine to find
the sound) to make sure the noise is from #4 intake, and not somewhere else?

You have two good lifters, they pump up hard. The bottoms of the lifters
look good. Do you remember which goes in what hole don't you? If you mixed
them up, replace!

Some scenario's to think about:

1. Did you try pulling a spark plug wire loose one at a time while running
the engine to see if the sound changes or goes away?

2. Matt makes a good point. The head studs are what the rocker studs screw
down onto. Was one loose? If you have a stud pulling it can cause a loose
lifter problem, where the force of the valve opening can actually work a
stud out of it is loose in the case.  But;

3. If the noise was still there when you did the last adjustment, meaning
you loosened until you could hear the tap tap tap, (was the noise already
there and it got worse at the same speed, cycle, and in sync with the tap
tap tap? or different?) then went to zero lash, the tap tap tap should go
away.

4. Was the tap tap tap of the loose lifter adjustment an additional sound?
Did the sound change at all? Was there a more pronounced sound, then
it got better but did not go away when you adjusted the lifter to zero lash?

5. Was the sound at the same cycle or rhythm of the valves opening and
closing but didn't change when the tap tap tap went away??

6. I know you said it sped up, ignore that, think of the sound, if it
didn't change, you are barking up the wrong tree, the noise is somewhere
else.

7. While Compression is off a bit on the left bank, its not out of the good
range yet, but, unless you suspect piston damage and/or see
scratches/scoring through a spark plug hole, ignore it for the moment. But
it could be piston slap.

8. Try to gently push the valve springs over sideways at the top with a
screwdriver to see if you have one guide looser than the other. If that
does not reveal anything, all that is left is to remove the head and find
out what is going on. I still suspect a loose valve seat. Unless you can
identify a sound somewhere else.

Anyone else want to pipe in? What am I missing?

It's as much as my experienced but disorganized brain can offer tonight.
