The good news is that a gasket between the exhaust housing and the main  
bearing carrier will add space to the turbine if needed. Also remember that  
clearance can only be checked - and the impeller spun, when the exhaust 
housing  is mounted in place. The final clamping of the housing compresses the 
preload  spring under the turbine, allowing the rotating assembly to - uh - 
rotate. Many  turbos have been acquired because the wheels wouldn't spin with 
the housing  removed. "Well - I guess it is frozen!" - Seth
