<VV> Strut rod battle

Good work, Jon.

Not all the "hocky stick" "strut rod" "brake reaction rod" "caster
adjusting rod" (did I get all the names?) nuts are impossible to remove.
Some are here in the east, along with the rod being rusted half or more
through also. I have to move these nuts while doing front end alignments,
as they are the caster adjustement. Lots of penetrant, sometimes the "blue
wrench" (needing new bushings then...) and long wrenches for mechanical
leverage. And young strong arms! Something I used to have around the shop.
"I need younger friends" is a common saying around here.

It was a good idea to have another good set ready, as many times around
here the existing ones are unuseable.

The term cancer for rust has been around for so long that I don't think it
is possible to change the use. The term is not for a patch of rust, but a
body that is eaten up in many areas, some unseen at first glance. West
coasters do not know the correct use of the term! They are using it too
often. I personally do not use the term, usually. I do have a 62 coupe and
a 63 convertible that are the definition of the term. They are just
awaiting salvageing of a few parts. My wife has been 5 years since a
lumpectomy.

I won. After struggling to get the nuts off my strut rods so that I
could replace the rubber bushings, I took to the rods with my angle
grinder. Thanks Harbor Freight! 67 year old body rolling around on
garage floor- it was not pretty, and watching the shower of sparks
pinging off the fuel tank gave me something to think about while
grinding. BUT! A couple of hours of work, and the old rods are in the
recycling bin. I found a new pair with good threads before starting, of
course. Moral is, don't waste your time with those old peened nuts- you
will not get them off. You will hurt yourself trying. Trust me....

Now, a request.... most of us have had someone close to us battling with
cancer. Sometimes losing that horrible fight. If you wish to talk about
your 'vair's rust here, is it really necessary to describe it as
'Cancer?' There is no comparison between a person's struggle with a
terrible disease and a patch of rust in an old car, and I know it jolts
me to see the word used so frequently and so loosely. Just one man's
opinion.
