Rich, 

Here's how I do it.  First, prime the oil circuit with a drill.  Once youve done that, I back all the valve adjustments off to about 3 threads showing on each rocker stud.  This way, you won't have any valves too tight.  (I know you said you already adjusted them, but you should adjust them running once you get that far)  Make sure you have power to the coil.  You said you put in new plugs, cap, and wires.  No mention of the rotor.  You DID put it back in before installing the cap, right?    

As for the distributor, I make sure the timing mark on the pulley is at TDC, then intall it pointing at #1.  Try it.  If it doesn't start or acts funny,  just set it 180 out.  It's either one or the other.  Besides, it's not that hard to change it!! 

If you have spark, fuel, and air it has to run!!!  This method hasn't failed me yet.
