Sorry for the delay - I checked out the car this morning, and eventually
got it to a friend's house this afternoon.
The only damage done by the thief was to pop the ignition tumbler.
It seems that what stopped him/them was that the cooling system failed,
leaving them with steam and an unhappy motor. I'm guessing that's why
they discharged the fire extinguisher in the car. (at least part of the
discharge was in the corner behind the passenger seat where some exposed
wires and relays are. The water leak was right behind that, so it may
have looked like smoke?

The leak was due to a combination of factors - to carry coolant from the
engine to the radiator, my system uses sprinkler PVC, with
slip-to-thread adapters and stubs of galv steel to clamp the water hoses
onto.
I recently made some adjustments (ironically, I added a support) which
may have stressed the joint - a steel stub popped out of the PVC
threads, dumping coolant.

I don't have the cooling system back together yet - once I do, I will
check for water in oil, bubbles in coolant, etc. I did run the car for a
bit, before I discovered the coolant loss - it sounded fine.
So, I am relieved and optimistic.

Regards
Jay
