Way back when I looked at my 1968 Camaro. The owners told me that the
engine needed to be rebuilt. Sure enough, it ran really rough and his asking
price reflected the need for a rebuild. I bought it and when I came to
pick it up, I had a 1/2 x 9/16 wrench in my back pocket. I reached under the
air cleaner and tightened the nuts holding the carb down. In those years,
the studs were coarse thread and a common problem coming loose. The engine
smoothed right out. The car belonged to the Mrs. and by the withering
look she shot at her husband it seemed that he had convinced her to sell the
car rather than suffer the expense of rebuilding the engine. I left before
the argument ensued.

Sometimes it pays to know a little more than the seller.

I had a boat once that I couldn't really use. I found someone who wanted
a boat, and had a 73 Berry Mini-T dune buggy with a 110 Corvair engine he
would trade, even though the buggy was worth twice the boat. So I trailered
the boat, and arrived at the house. He said we would have to push it onto
the trailer as it would not start. He said he was a pit crew mechanic.
So I flipped the kill switch and tried to start it. No go. I went back to
the rear to watch while he cranked it. Hmmm. I studied it, then reached
in, changed the spark plug wires to the correct positions, started it up,
drove onto the trailer and took it home.
