Doug meant to say "disconnect the pitman arm from the cross shaft"! Leave  
it installed on the steering box, just pop out the bushing at the tip. That 
is  the bushing that is often worn out, often replaced by Nylon, etc. Do not 
remove  the Pitman arm - Not only is it close to impossible to do under the 
car, it is  not needed to do what Doug suggests, which is isolating the 
steering gear from  all the load of the suspension. Remember to have the wheels 
and the steering  gear close to center when re-attaching the bushing to the 
tip of the pitman arm.  If it is not centered, the rubber will be 
pre-loaded when you tighten it down  and center the wheel. This drastically reduces 
the life of a stock-type rubber  bushing. - Seth
