Mark, will it stay running if you shoot some starting fluid in the carbs when it starts to die. If so, then I would look at the carb filters if 1960's have them.   JIm Stukenborg

Are you sure you have good spark? Is the resistance wire bad or the coil
weak? The backfiring could be an electrical issue.
