All the info I've seen (including the cutaway vehicle at the LA car 
show) shows the Volt a "Series Hybrid".
Only the electric motor can drive the wheels.
The gas engine is only connected to the generator.

The Prius is a parallel Hybrid - the gas engine and the motor/generators 
can both drive the wheels.
As I understand it, one or more motors are an integral part of the 
transmission - a trippy design based on American patents.
