Sounds like possible spyder gear /shaft problem. get the book out and
study it , you will see what I mean. New spyder gear kit is the answer. The
spyder gear rides in the carrier , and is shimmed for adjustment. The axles
plug  into spyder gears thru the carrier. If this is a powerglide , replace 
ALL
seals  , including the one at the "nose" of the pinion shaft.  You can see
all of  this in the blow up in Clark's catalog.

Smitty Says;  Tim you been playing around on the dark side too long (messin 
with those Late models).  He's talking about a 64 where the yoke slide 
freely in and out of the carrier.  Yes the spline slides into the side gears 
but receives little support from that.   What is supposed to keep the shaft 
tight (from wobbling)  is the clearance between the ID of the carrier hubs 
and the diameter of the stub.  Replacement of either or both is the only 
answer.
