Hi Bill,

This sounds to me like you are grounding the main battery draw - the 
starter - thru something else in addition to or instead of a good engine to 
chassis ground. Any smaller circuit in use that could be the ground circuit 
will be overheating.  I would also look on ground wire side of circuits. You 
checked wiring at ignition switch. Pls. check ignition switch itself... Your 
nose may tell you where the isnulation is melted...

For a solution, I would clean starter, solenoid, and all battery terminals, 
plus, grounds-both ends, and braided suppressor grounds from chassis to 
engine shroud.
