Actually, since there is a code for the 4 speed, it could also be something that's added for that, rather than removed.  An extra clip for the wire?  I can't recall if the three speed got a shifter boot, but if specific to the four speed perhaps Fisher supplied that along with the carpet.  So, PG = no hole, 3 sp = hole, 4 sp = hole + boot?  Maybe black boot only for 3 sp, color key for 4?
