<VV> [SCG] Fisher 4 speed option code

I doubt it, Mark. The assembly manual usually notes when they release a part to Fisher and there are no such notes concerning the shifters. It's pretty clear that Chevrolet installed the shifters.

Bill,

Possibly because the shifter goes in before the carpet. It might be just pecking order. Fisher was responsible for the carpet, but had to ship it loose because Chevy needed the floor access. Otherwise, the shifter could have been inserted in the hole, but not nailed down, and the carpet laid over it. Then when it got to Chevy, they'd nail it down from underneath. Just one possibility.

Mark,

That could explain it, I guess, IF Fisher actually provided the shifter, but I don't think they did. It has a part number in the Chevy assembly manual which implies that Chevy provided it.

I knew about the front carpet and I understand that, but why would a BODY factory make or provide the shifter?? It doesn't make any sense.

Not sure what the original message was, but it could refer to the possibility that Fisher supplied the shift lever in the car, either nailed down or loose, wouldn't matter. They did such things as supplied the front carpet, loose, since Chevy needed access to the toeboard hole in order to run some of the cables, wires, etc. that come up through it. Then the Chevy people would finish installing the carpet at the appropriate time, after they were done doing what they needed to do.

The lever was chrome on 4 speed cars, painted black on 3 speed cars, even if it was a top of the line car like the Corsa. Hence the need to distinguish the two on the build sheet (and body tag).

I'm starting to think that the reason for this code is some arcane reinforcement plate somewhere in the body and we will probably never figure it out unless we dissect a 3 speed and a 4 speed side by side and look at everything.
