<VV> - Flywheel bolts, tapering,and ring questions

Taper bolts are often used to center a bolt in a hole, and along with other 
bolts, thereby making a part fit , located where one wants it. The large 
ring is a reinforcement for the tapered plate center section of the flywheel 
(tapered plate - provides a shock absorber-like effect to assist the 
drivetrain). In machinery, often fine thread screws of a stronger material, 
like a Grade 8, are used to fasten pieces without lock-washers.  In the case 
of the Corvair crankshaft to flywheel bolts, the bolt heads are shallow for 
clearance to the clutch disk.

More thoughts:

I thought the "taper" was to tighten the bolt as it got deeper into the
part, for a tighter fit, to prevent loosening due to vibration, etc?

Is the point of the flywheel "ring" that it acts as a single lock washer,
since it is "softer" than the flywheel center itself?

I got confused between taper and shoulder. I understood "tapered" as
"shouldered".
