<VV> Not Getting Stranded

The front half of the crank and its pistons would be active; the rear half
would have to be disabled, and I assume loosening the valves, closed.
I can't even image how this would work...

ok, what do you "adjust" to let you drive with a  broken crank?
I'm guessing it broke so that the two ends still kind of rotated together,
just made nasty noises?
