That sounds like a good way to prime the pump. I'll give that a try. Any
chance of pushing too hard (or far) and rupturing the diaphragm?

If you have fuel at the pump you can remove the pump mount screw and pump it
manually to see what happens.  That should eliminate the length issues and
you can feel fuel in the pump when it starts to work.
