<VV> starter issue?

Yes, the solenoid is good. You proved that by the starter turning. In order
for the starter to turn (DC volts applied to the starter via the solenoid),
the solenoid plunger must make it to the end of its travel to push the
electrical contacts together.

The drive (Bendix is the type of drive used on old Fords) is bad. It will
come and go.

Now, if you said you had to turn the key to start 20 times before the
starter turned, and all 20 times there was a big click, then the solenoid
would be the prime suspect. This is when the contacts do not make up.

Seth is also right that it is easier to pull the complete starter off the
engine and then replace the solenoid, brushes, whatever, than to replace
anything with the starter still on the engine.

What a revolting development that is! (It is probably the "bendix" drive,
not the solenoid.) It is easier swapping out the whole starter than the
solenoid. -Seth

Guys,
I am one of the few who drive a Corvair daily as my sole car. The other
night the starter would spin without the solenoid engaging. It took
multiple tries until it finally worked normally. Since then it has worked
normally.

I don't know whether I should put a new solenoid this weekend; or chalk it
up to gremlins. Any opinions?
Thanks,
Andy K.
