<VV> '65 3-speed is non-synchro, but '66-'69 is synchro?

Our '64 Monza convert originally had a 3-speed with synchronized 2nd and 3rd but non-synchro 1st. It was the worst transmission I ever drove.
I know how to double-clutch and float-shift multi-speed "crash boxes" in heavy trucks, but with that Corvair tranny I was never able to downshift into 1st while rolling -- never!
Also, its ratios were poor. There was a big gap between 2nd and 3rd. It seemed to be missing a ratio, right about where 3rd is in a 4-speed. Is that how it was designed and made -- just yank out the 3rd gear and call it a 3-speed?
I had it converted to a 4-speed and the car is much more drivable.

Most every GM 3 speed transmission from the early 30s to 1965 has
synchros in second and third gear. It is first gear that is not
synchronized.
