Physical inspection -
Put it on stands, grab a tire, wiggle in-our, left right. Look for play, 
see what moves.

To check the ball joint, need to jack under the lower a-arm to compress 
the spring a bit - to where the upper a-arm is off its rubber stop.
Then see if there's any motion at the ball joint when you shake the 
wheel. I forget what the specs are - one or more of the books will have 
that info.
Or you could cheat and take it to an alignment shop and have them do an 
inspection. Find a place with guys old enough to have actually worked on 
them.
