<VV> Engine stops running

Years ago I over hauled a v8 while the care was up on jack stands the gas line was leaking and one of the fellow employees came along and stuck a pencil in the line. Car would only run a couple miles let it set and would start again and run a couple more miles.  Took the line loose at the fuel pump, got a rag and put around the gas tank fill neck and blew, when the pencil came out I was pissed.
