Given the odd way it is wired into the AC fan relay, it probably has no effect most of the time.  If in the specific combination of engine off, fan switch on high, and headlights on; there would probably be some strange behavior.  The exact behavior probably depends on the nature of the individual components.

The selenium rectifier is an early version of the commonly used now DIODE. the rectifier allows current to flow in just one direction. thus it allows the headlights to cut the A/C fan to medium when on but doesn't allow the A/C fan to turn on the headlights.
