We just got back from that movie.
The car was driven by a family of criminals, who picked up the three 
Minions as hitchhikers.
I see the influence now, didn't notice it in the movie - looked like a 
full sized boat with V8 and nautical handling.
I thought it looked vaguely like a big Pontiac, but missing a grille. 
Cartoon license.
