How right you are. My first Corvair a 63 came with a rubber mat and yes the first year I was sandblasting and painting the floor. Took the Corvair to Fairbanks Alaska and drove it summertime only. Check the floor yearly and no more rust. Sold it up there so it most likely met a rusty fate as the new owner said he was taking it to Georgia.
