Paul,

We had a similar issue with a recently rebuilt engine. Short story. The oil 
control rings were incorrect for the Corvair piston's slot. Upon being 
compressed and piston being put into cylinder, the oil control rings were 
stuck in piston ring grooves. Ring grooves were correct. The little nubs or 
bumps on inside of the oil spacer/expansion dring (other two are scrapers, 
was stuck between scrapers in the groove). Found t his upon pulling pistons 
from cylinders..
Ring set was faulty.
