Bob, its all splash lube from the oil hole in the push rod out there. The
push rods rotate with each actuation by a cam lobe and coats everything
with oil. Intake suction pulls oil in, more than desired so you have intake
valve seals there.
There are also additives in the gas that lubricate the lower valve stems.
Not sure how much today with these no lead fuels.
