<VV> Transmissions : Convert 4-speed to 3-Speed w/Overdrive

Is it possible to change ratios inside a 4-speed transmission to convert it to a 3-Speed, with 1:1 as 3rd, and Overdrive 1+:1 for highway driving?

I'm always trying to find 5th, and it feels like it could do it with ease, but THERE IS NO 5th GEAR!!

Here's my penny's worth on lower rpm for Corvair engines: I owned a '62 Monza with the 102 and a 4-speed back in the day and found that yes, it had to rev to make decent power and stay happy. For instance, while passing on a two-lane highway I almost always had to downshift to 3rd, then get on the gas to get around the slower car.
Now I have a '64 Monza with a 110 and, thanks partly to its larger displacement (and maybe a milder cam), its torque curve is much wider. It can be lugged down to 30 mph or less in 4th gear without protesting, and can pass on a two-laner in 4th and makes good power and torque while doing it.
So my guess is that a 5-speed (or 4th-overdrive) would work well with a 110, and wouldn't hurt it. But not with a 102.

The same arguments apply to virtually all modifications.

Smitty,

I agree but it would be really 'cool'.
