Bronco, Ford's first SUV, turns 50
Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photos courtesy Ford Motor Company, except where noted.Other manufacturers had pioneered the format before the Bronco. Others had even applied the "sport utility" name to their products before the Bronco. But Ford's Bronco, when it hit the scene in late 1965, was the first to combine the two and open wide the four-wheeling market - and then later take that market into luxury territory. Starting later this month, a number of celebrations will mark the off-roader's upcoming 50th anniversary. When Ford introduced ... Read On>>
Hemmings Find of the Day - 1931 Morgan Aero
Posted by Daniel Strohl - Sure, the recently reintroduced Morgan three-wheelers use up-to-date drivetrains and feature rather luxurious interiors, but they don't quite have the old-world hand-built charm of the originals, as we see on display on this 1931 Morgan Aero for sale on Hemmings.com, a well-finished example built for vintage racing and for standing out from the crowd. From the seller's description:successfully and extensively vintage raced in the Northeast with VSCCA for the past 13 years. Lime Rock, Watkins Glenn, New Hampshire S...Read On>>
Bill "Maverick" Golden, 1933-2015
Posted by David Conwill - Bill "Maverick" Golden. Photos courtesy of the NHRA MuseumWe recently learned that Bill Maverick Golden has passed away. Golden was well known to drag racing fans for his Dodge A100 exhibition wheelstander, which was immortalized in plastic by IMC Models shortly after it began appearing on dragstrips. Before he drove the Little Red Wagon, as the A100 was known, Golden was a conventional drag racer. A Midwesterner by birth, he settled in California following his 1956 discharge from the United States Mari...Read On>>
Midweek Matinee: Disaster Double Feature, 1937 and 1940
Posted by Ed Heys - All photos are frame grabs from video below.Attention transportation-lovers: Beware of dangerous conditions ahead. Or overhead.Long before they could fly the friendly skies of United, a select audience of well-heeled overseas travelers chose the air transport of the future: the rigid dirigible. And right up until May 6, 1937, at Lakehurst, New Jersey, these astonishingly massive craft certainly appeared to be the undisputed masters of luxurious air transportation. To its credit, the Hindenburg did...Read On>>
Can our collective carspotting skills help find the loot from the biggest U.S. art heist?
Posted by Daniel Strohl - Images courtesy U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Massachusetts. It's worth a try, at least. A quarter century on, federal investigators still have little to go on when it comes to locating the $500 million worth of art stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, but a recently released video might help them track the loot down, if only they can identify the car in the video. And that's where we come in. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston and the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Inspector General ap...Read On>>
Las Vegas, 1956
Posted by Daniel Strohl - While we recently argued that many of the cars we see in these Las Vegas carspotting scenes may very well be rentals, here we see at least a couple cars that we know for sure drove into town for the Fremont Street neon spectacle, based on their license plates. As for the happy couple, not even the uncropped version of this photo over on Vintage Las Vegas shows enough of their license plate to tell where they came from. Some place where they still taught hand signals, apparently. What do you see here?...Read On>>
