Before starting it, you should "prime" the oil circuit.  You do this by removing the distributor and 'invent' your own priming tool. Some use a long rod with the end made flat to fit into the oil pump gear shaft.  Me, I use an old distributor with the gear removed. Then you can clamp it in place.  Then hook up a drill to the shaft and spin away until primed.  Also, If you have one, you can attach an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit.  This way you can watch the oil pressure as well.  Happy priming!
