I like to use diesel or kerosene.  It works great on all but the worst items.  Although it does smell a little, one can learn to avoid the smell with a little practice.  I use the smaller nitrile rubber gloves inside the "gardening" type nitrile rubber gloves.  They take a lot of abuse and when you somehow poke a teeny hole in them, the smaller gloves protect your hands.  I use a little baby powder to aid in putting the small ones on and off.  Actually, this setup works so well I've used the same gardening gloves for many months.  They do have a few teeny holes in them, but there is enough glove left to keep on going.
