tightening the bolts evenly goes a long way to helping with this. Chances are only one bolt was used...

Over the years I have changed a half dozen rear housings that were cracked by bolts being used to remove the balancer. 

Sure the bolts hit the steel of the deal, but that offers no protection to the aluminum.
