Randy,
Just a note on your statement below.  Yes that is  absolutely true and 
irrelevant. It's irrelevant because that is not the concern  about using GL5  
rated lubes. The concern as identified by Richard1 and  described in his 
articles is that GL5 IS TOO SLIPPERY. A Corvair MT during a  shift has to have 
the synchros "cut thru" the lube to bring the rotating parts  up to the same 
speed for the shift. By being so slippery, more force is required  to 
accomplish the shift and that causes additional wear.

They  told me that, yes, in the early days there were some issues with gear 
oil  eating "yellow parts".  But that was remedied a good while  back.
