SCRAMP Reorganizes Business Structure

Monterey, CA -- The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), founder and 59-year operator of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, has created a Board of Governors that will have full fiduciary governance, including financial oversight and short- and long-term planning, for the not-for-profit 501(c)(4) organization.

Local industry and business leaders Mairead Hennessey, Michael Plitkins, Darius Sadeghi and Mike Smith join existing SCRAMP officers Gregg Curry, Dr. Dean Fewtrell and Gregg McWilliams on the SCRAMP Race and Events Board.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca contributed $62.1 million to the Monterey County economy during the 2015 five-race major event season through direct trip spending of non-county visitors, and produced $5.2 million in state and local taxes, according to a research study by California State University Monterey Bay. Since 2002, SCRAMP has invested $23 million in facility improvements including a hospitality center, suites and garages and new grandstands.

Bondurant, Mims, Kramer Are 2016

Corvette Hall of Fame Inductees

Bowling Green, KY -- Bob Bondurant is one of three individuals being honored with the National Corvette Museum's highest honor for contributions to the past, present and future of Corvette. He was selected in the racing category, and joins Ralph Kramer in the GM/Chevrolet category, as well as the late Donna Mae Mims in the enthusiast category.

During Corvette's early years, Bondurant helped to validate the Chevrolet Corvette as a world-class sports car, winning on racetracks both in the U.S. and abroad. Among those achievements is winning 18 of 20 SCCA-B production races in 1959 and clinching the West Coast Championship in his 1957 Corvette No. 51. From 1959-63, Bob won 30 of the 32 races entered, driving the Shelly Washburn 1959 Corvette and the 1963 Z06 Sting Ray, both No. 614. In 1967, Bob led the GT Class at Le Mans with co-driver Dick Guldstrand in a stock L88 Corvette Sting Ray until retiring at the 15th hour.

Ralph Kramer was one of the first Chevrolet executives to bolster GM support for the Corvette Museum in its founding years. He helped the museum gain stature with the management of Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada Division. He also served on the Museum's Board of Directors from 1990 to 1998.

Known as "The Lady in Pink," the late Donna Mae Mims became a true Corvette enthusiast from the moment she first saw a new 1957 model on a dealership lot. Mims got involved in SCCA and started racing in 1961, winning the B Production ladies race that year at Cumberland. In 1963, she won the SCCA H Production National Championship with her "Think Pink" Sprite.

On the block at RM Sotheby's Arizona is Cobra CSX3010, here at Thompson International Speedway in 1969. (photo: Bill Debbins Collection)

The car claimed the SCCA's 1968 A-Production championship and the 1971 Eastern Canadian Endurance Championship before undergoing a full restoration in the 1980s. Since then, it has competed at the Monterey Historics on multiple occasions, and is now offered with its original front clip, street and race equipment, and extensive documentation, with an auction estimate of $2.5 to $3.3 million.

The 427 is joined by a 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra "Dragonsnake," chassis no. CSX 2093. Converted to 'Dragonsnake' specifications in 1965, CSX 2093 experienced success throughout its drag-racing career, setting numerous records and securing national titles in four separate classes. The Cobra is presented exactly as it competed, including a Weber-carbureted 289 Ford V8 with Bellanger side-mount headers, 4-speed transmission, Cobra Sunburst rear wheels with slicks, wire front wheels, and removable hardtop at an auction estimate of $1.4 to $1.65 million.

Rounding out the trio of iconic Shelbys is a 1964 Shelby 289 Cobra, chassis no. CSX2561, estimate to sell between $950,000 and $1.1 million. With a beautifully maintained restoration, the Cobra has been freshly resprayed in its original white. Its recent mechanical servicing includes the installation of a correct, 4-speed manual transmission.

We look back at the amazing career of SCCA's Championship record holder, Jerry Hansen, while Allen Grant remembers his favorite race -- in a Cobra, of course!

There's also the history of Chevron's GT Prototypes and editor D. Randy Riggs stirs up some back roads in a 1954 MG TF. And don't miss the story of "Hard Luck Lloyd," when 50 years ago Lloyd Ruby teamed with Ken Miles to win both the Daytona 24 and 12 Hours of Sebring back to back.

Event coverage includes the CSRG Charity Challenge, HSR's Classic 24 at Daytona and Savannah Speed Classic, SVRA's COTA Championship, the Shelby Employee Reunion, the VSCDA Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival and the last-ever York U.S. 30 Reunion.
