Mike what you have experienced is a common problem when trying to start a car with a weak battery or poor cable connection. You turn the start switch and the solenoid strokes weakly bringing the contact disc into position to join the battery and starter together electrically. Note; I said weakly. The solenoid is not fully empowered and does not press the contacts tightly creating a partial connection and a high resistance. The resultant heat tack welds the disc to the contacts. Even though you remove the start circuit at the ignition switch the starter is now connected to the battery and will run until the tack weld gets hot enough to release or it just cracks loose from the starter vibration. In worst cases you have to pull the starter and take the solenoid apart to break the disc loose. (or put on another)
Either bring your battery up to voltage or find your loose/poor connection in the cables
