During the '80s I did the same thing to my '66 beater convertible when I replaced the clutch and had to get it back on the road.  An experienced mechanic gave me the tip and the '66 gave me at least two more years of service without breaking another starter.  Today it wouldn't be a beater, but who knew back then--our cars were so cheap to buy as daily drivers.Bob
