I put magnetic plugs in the stock location on the transmission and differential. Not easy and does require removal but the right way to do it.

the cheapie fluid pumps wouldn't be complete, but you could stuff the
suction hose into the fill/check plug, and pump out what you can.
Refill it, and run the sucker for a while while up on jack stands, then
repeat.
That would stir up any (or most) remaining crud for the second suctioning.

Really, drilling and tapping for a drain plug sounds like the best bet.
(could still do the flush sequence after installing the drain plug)

As usual, easy and good don't really coincide!

Does anyone bother using a magnetic drain plug?
