Richard, the "resistance wire" WILL 'cool down' with the Points OPEN. This is why there is an "ACC" position on the Ignition Switch. It will allow you to use the Radio without 'burning up' the Points, Coil, and Resistance Wire!Many people made this mistake (Leaving the Switch in RUN, not ACC) in the '60s and ruined their Ignitions!
If you want to leave the Ignition Switch in "ON" without the engine running, pull the negative coil wire off (don't forget to put it back on before trying to start the engine)!
