One final note. Since Grade 8 was originally specified for this application,
you should use the torque values in the shop manual. Except, I cannot find
the Torque value anywhere in my 65 manual. Industry standard for those size
bolts (1/4-20 NC Grade 8) is 9-12 Ft lbs. New, nicely plated bolts 9 Ft-lbs,
plain or worn finish 12 Ft lbs. Using the correct values means the bolt will
provide the correct clamping force, and (usually) not back out on it's own
accord.    

Also important. If you substitute a Grade 8 fastener for a Grade 5 - or
lower - you must use the Grade 8 torque value. The stretch of the correct
torque is what makes the bolt stay in place. NOTE! Pay attention to the
female threads you are using. They must also be capable of handling the
Grade 8 torque. If you (over) torque a grade 8 bolt into most aluminum
castings, you will find out exactly how they made those aluminum threads,
because they will be stuck to the bolt threads as the bolt spins in the hole
and falls out. Don't be tempted to change over to Grade 8 for everything. If
you can supply a Grade 8 (equivalent) nut for the backside, go for it. But
don't assume any nut can take the increased torque.

This is a high-stress location and only Grade 8  is specified.
High strength lock washers are also installed and I recommend adding some
loctite to the threads when installing as well.
