I just went to re-line the front brakes on one of my 64 convertibles. 
One of the drums didn't want to come off but the other did with a bit of 
tapping. Then I read that they're not meant to come off! I have two 
different drum/hub assemblies on the front, one with the drum rivetted 
and one not - not even any holes for rivets. I robbed the hubs/drums off 
a parts car & the rivets had been drilled out but that's not a problem & 
at least they now match! So I did the re-line but one of the drums is 
rubbing on the backplate at the top. I noticed that the other side had 
been doing the same with the old hub/drum fitted. Do they normally run 
close or does this indicate a mis-match somewhere. It's not a real 
problem as it's only rubbing lightly & while it makes a horrible noise 
it will just take the rust off the back of the drum in a few miles I 
reckon. Wheel bearings are all adjusted ok.
I had read that the later cars did have detachable drums so I thought I 
had one of those on one side - but then I read that they were five stud! 
So I have a four-stud hub with detachable drum & no rivet holes. Any 
ideas what it might be from?
Next question - what is the recommended tire size for a 64 Corvair - 
how about bias-ply tires? Any good? This is not going to be a show car - 
just a good reliable daily driver. Incredibly, the body is showing no 
signs of corrosion underneath nor any repairs. Floor pans are rusty on 
top surface from damp carpets but underneath is like new. It's a Nevada 
car.
