Here's my final finding.  When I drained the transmission I did it thru the detent ball and spring plug and did not notice them coming out.  When I filled it and drove it I had no 3/4 shift.  I could not free it up.  I removed the side cover and the 3/4 shift fork would not move at all.  The engine and drive line will be removed.  Bottom line is that the detent plug is not a good way to drain the transmission if you don't know what you're doing.

At the very least I think it's narrowed down to the shifter as the place to start.  Let us know what you find.
