Yep, it's open.  And remember that when you lift an early car, at full
suspension drop, the brake shoes will drag a bit (if adjusted correctly) as
the angle between the drum and backing plate changes.  The geometry is not
exact between the swing-arm and the axle, so the relationship between the
drum and the backing plate does in fact change with suspension movement.
