Consider also that a PG engine can be installed into a stick car without swapping the bellhousing, *and* you can install between early and late transaxles.  So, the crankcase to diff distance must have stayed the same.

Note that the bellhousings are different for short vs. long stroke engines.  So there are four distinct types.
