So many complaints!

Some of you suggested that, during our interviews, we should have notified the bidders that our retiring editor, Mike McGowan, had to scramble to get articles to fill up the Communique. In fact, this topic was discussed during the job interview. And Don was concerned about it. I wrote the meeting notes and I have a copy of them. But neither Mike’s nor Don’s contract required them to beg for articles, and with the two feature articles that Mike provided to Don for the March Communique, there was enough material to fill the number of pages specified in the contract.

Each bidder received a copy of our proposed contract before entering into their agreements. I can assure you that, if the proposed contract required the Executive Editor to scramble at the last minute for content, we’d have no bidders at all.

It was suggested that we should have examined other club magazines edited by Don Keefe before we entered into a contract with him.. CORSA’s bid evaluation team actually did that. And we came to the conclusion that his other work is both attractive and informative.

One commenter wrote, “It is not like there was no warning that Mike and Harry was leaving!” I take that to mean that we should have searched harder for somebody else to be our new Executive Editor, or perhaps hired a CORSA member to be the Executive Editor. I can assure you we searched very hard. On September 29, 2016, we asked people to submit bids for the Executive Secretary, Executive Editor, and Social Media Editor. That request was posted right here, in Virtual Vairs, as well as on the Corvair Center Forum, CorvairForum, Corvair Owners Facebook Group, and Corvair Society of America Facebook Group – all on that very same date. The same request was posted in not one but two articles in the November / December 2016 Communique. In addition, we asked for bids in ZipRecruiter and received dozens of bids from people outside the Corvair hobby. All the bidders received a formal request for proposals including the expected products and services they were expected to provide, as well as a proposed contract.

Do you know how mamy CORSA members applied for the Executive Editor position? Answer: Two.

Oh, by the way, there’s a good reason why the March Communique contained no information about candidates for the CORSA Board of Directors. Except for the incumbents, THERE AREN’T ANY! But we sure seem to have a lot of complainers out there….

Now, for those of you who offered constructive comments - and there are a lot of you - I thank you. As Steve noted above, Don has been made aware of them and I know he wants to do a good job for us. Please give him a chance here.
