 About 20 years ago I bought a degreasing machine from Harbor Freight for a transmission project, as I recall. HF also sold a water-based degreasing fluid which was skin-safe. It did cause some tingling and dried the skin a bit, but otherwise had no adverse effects and did work well. HF might still sell it. 
Also, to remove serious grime and grease, vegetable oil supposedly works. I read that in a car restorers' magazine, and the tip was sent in by a guy who restored farm tractors, so he probably knew what he was talking about.
