Changes shift point.

See shop manual.

So at 35 MPH, with 3:55 gears (typical of Powerglide) the engine rpm is 
1750. Downshifting gets you up to  (1.82:1 ratio)  3200 rpm. Sounds 
fast, but engine is OK.  At 47 mph, in low, rpm should be 4277. That is 
as fast as you would want to be!
