Up to two turns of PTFE tape will be fine. The threads will cut through. Now 5 or 6 layers not so much. Follow directions. Or just use pipe dope. New switches come with dope already on the threads.

The switch itself can be bad also. Check to make sure the bulb is good in the dashboard. Make sure the dash ground is clean. Other than that, the problem may be in the harness itself.

So I made up a new ground (earth) wire, cleaned all the connections and installed it to what I think are the right locations. However this has not corrected the problem and I am now wondering if I might not have not connected the ground wire correctly?
