The cam thrust washer should be tight between the gear and the cam
shoulder. This controls the thrust motion of the camshaft so the washer
needs to be tight. This is a press fit between the aluminum cam gear and
the iron camshaft. You may want to heat the cam gear and press it in one
operation onto the camshaft.
I don't understand your second question. How is it getting tight when the
clearance is increasing?
